Awakening Q&A: Who Wants To Know?

Changes in the locus or placement of consciousness after spiritual awakening

READER Q&A

Q: You wrote that having one’s consciousness up above your head is normal and is happening for a reason.

Would you be able to elaborate a little? is it simply part of the process of realising that one is more than one’s body and mind, so the focus shifts? a new ‘body’ awareness?

A: I don’t claim to be any kind of expert on why certain things happen the way they do.

I can tell you that having your awareness shift from inside your head, so to speak, to somewhere slightly outside your head is normal. It’s normal in that it happened to me as well. But I have no idea why it happens. Mine was about a foot out and slightly above my third eye. It was like that for two years.

In the end, who wants to know why? The mind wants to know why. Why does it want to know? Because that is what the mind does. It’s bored. It wants to feel important, in the center of things, and suddenly it is not. So it inserts itself and asks why. If I were able to tell you exactly why (and it would probably be some elaborate, supremely esoteric answer involving paradigms and matrices we’ve never even heard of), would it make any difference?

Relax. Trust and let it happen. Ask for help if you need it. If you feel overwhelmed, sit and breathe, go outside and take a walk, breathing and moving seem to help move through tight spots. It’s a strange process, but it won’t lead to you becoming an axe murderer or growing curly hair on the palms of your hands. It is a good transformation.

You are beloved, watched over and perfectly safe. It will settle, and then it may swell up again. It’s okay, as long as you are not expecting to stand on solid ground. From here on out it’s about flow, not demarcating and defending our territory. Be content. Keep opening.

  1. I am newly awakened and experienced a quick shift of awareness outside of my body – like u said in the article..close to my head but just outside and it was so exciting to witness my body continue typing at work separate from my awareness. I have a long way to go but wanted to ask advice of how can I experience that again? I’m not sure what happened that day as it only happened for a short while. Trying to balance my desire to stay fully awakened/connected with earthly demands is tough and I’m glad I found your site 🙂

Hi Amara, and thank you for sharing the information you share.

    Now, two questions:

    1. how do you know you’ve achieved enlightenment? and

    2. did you search for it — and what practice or practices did you use to reach it — or did it happen spontaneously, as when people have a sudden Kundalini awakening?

    Thanks.
